Harbor in Brittany - Emile Breysse
Emile Breysse (1880-1965) was a French artist, born in Auvergne. He worked primarily in Vichy where he exhibited regularly in the 1920’s and 1930’s. He moved to Paris before the outbreak of WWII, where he opened a studio. Known for his singular impressionist style, of which this is a captivating example; the rendering of the sky is so delightful in the piece! This oil on board is signed lower right, label on verso, in it’s original frame. Importantly, he was comissioned by the major Montmartre art galeries. You will find him listed in all major French art indicies, and his work is highly coveted - 3 of them purchased by the City of Paris!
