Chicken Farm - Phillibert Leon Couturier
Leon Couturier (1823-1901) was French, born in Chalon. In 1844 he began his formal studies at the presitigous l’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He was strongly influenced by the Barbizon School, mastering the soft but realistic techniques with timeless appeal. Through his friendship wth artist/writer and bohemian Theophile Gautier, he became very well known. His works were well appreciated in their own time, in particular, his expert paintings of animals. Today, his works may be found in major museums such as the Musee Vivant-Denon, the Musee Antoine Lecuyer, the Nice Museum of Fine Art, the Musee des Arts Reims, and the Musee des Arts Poitiers. This larger scale work is a superb oil on canvas, signed lower right in original frame.
