Harry Sticks, English, (1867-1938) was born in Newcastle, the son of well-known artist of the same name. We offer this oil on canvas, signed lower right with Expo label and studio write-up on verso. Spectacular frame (see close up photograph). After completing an art apprentiship at the Northumbria Art Institute, in 1897 he took an extended trip abroad that cemented him as an artist. He visited Rotterdam, Gibralter, Genoa, Turkey, Greece, Malta and Trinidad; in his travels he was exposed to different cultures and artistic styles. His painting was refined in the process, evindent in this example of his work. He was well exhibited in his time, having had his work seen at the Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, Royal Society of Artists and the famous Laing Gallery in Newcastle.
