Venice - Arthur Vidal Diehl
Englishman Arthur Vidal Diehl (1870-1929) was as inspired by Venice as so many artists over the centuries. This work is signed lower right in the original frame, and captures a ship arriving as we get a glimpse of homes and gondolas of the day. The frame itself is quite unusual, and mimics the chopppy surface of the water. He was born in London and by 20 years of age was exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He arrived in the US in 1891 and settled in Massachussets, where his work was appreciated - and aquired - by the local population. He opened a studio in Provincetown called The Art Shop, and painted on comission. Today, many of his paintings are found in important private collections!
Measurements with frame 23”x18”, without frame 17”x12”.
