Red Roan- Margaret Fisher Prout
Fabulous female artist Margaret Fisher Prout (1873-1963) was English, born in London. We are delighted to have a work by this esteemed woman! This larger-format oil on board is signed lower left and dated 1934, well into her extensive career. Fisher Prout studied under her artist-father Mark Fisher at the Slade Art School between 1894 and 1897. She became recognized as a fine impressionist artist with unorthodox methods such as the use of pigments in unusual ways. By 1914 she was teaching at the Hammersmith School of Arts and Crafts, and by 1922 had a solo exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery. Despite being a woman, she was heralded in her time, having exhibited at the New English Art Club (the Royal Academy of Arts did not accept female artists), the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hiberian Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute as well. She promoted the Society of Women Artists by exhibiting there consistently for over 35 years and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1948. Today her works are present in many major European museums. This piece retains a gallery label on verso.
