Coast of Saint Tropez - Laurent Gsell
Laurent Gsell (1860-1944) was the son of Gaspard Gsell, a well known French painter. He attended the School of Fine Arts in Paris, later exhibiting a the Salon of the Society of French Artists in 1880 and the Universal Exposition in 1889. In 1909 he became a member of the National Society of Fine Arts. Importantly, he was appointed Painter to the Navy in 1911. Gsell became known for his mix of impressionism and post-impressionist, taking on a broad array of subjects from the popular balls of French society to marine and landscape scenes. This work showcases the wonderful movement of his brushstrokes, but yet evokes a calm emotion. This work is larger in scale, and will make quite a statement wherever it is hung.
