Table Still Life - Henri de Saint Ellis
Henri de Saint Ellis (1878-19590 was French, born in Pas de Calais. This was a pseudonmy for his true name, Marie Isidore Henri Lenard de Saint Ellis. He never exhibited during his lifetime, choosing instead to keep all of his work private. He attended l’Ecole des Beaux Arts-Havre, where he was influenced by Raoul Dufy and Georges Braque, among others. He then moved to Paris where he was employed at the Adademie Julian. His works were discovered by the public only in 1954 when the Parisian gellery Andre Weil held an exposition of his paintings; afterward, his paintings became popularized by those appreciating his avant guarde style. In 2017, the museum Eugene Boudin de Honfleur organized a massive and well attended exposition. This painting is oil on board, signed middle left (on the book!), in it’s original frame.
