Storm off the Coast - Stephen Batchelder
Batchelder (1849-1932) was an English painter, born in Norwich but moved to Preston where he initially studied drawing. He later attended the Yarmouth School of Art where his talents flourished and his style emerged. In 1872 he started to work as a professional painter and became a successful Broadland Artist of the area, painting alonside such talent as Charles Harrisson, who considered Batchelder his primary rival. Batchelder was so sucessful that his work supported his financial needs, and built his confidence such that, in 1883, he staged a private exhibition that resulted in many private commissions. He exhibited at the Royal Adademy and the Royal Institute and was well established and recognized as one of the best Norwhich artists of his time. This impressive oil on canvas is large in scale, signed lower left and dated 1885, with frontal name plaque and spectacular original frame.
