German Henry Thomas Schaefer (1833-1916) was born in Hannover but showed promise at an early age and studied at the famed Ecole National des Beaux Arts in Paris. He traveled througout Europe, painting extensively, then settled in England in 1864. In 1889 he was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists, an honor for a German! Beginning in 1873 he exhibited at the Royal Society, the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy as well. One can see the influence of Alfred Montague and Samuel Prout in his work. This is an excellent piece for the cultivated eye; note the characteristic detail, the rendering of light, shadow and sky. This is a striking oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated 1879 lower left,

Measurements with frame (vertical) 24”X28”, without frame 19.5”X23.5”.
