Esteemed American painter Emile Gruppe (1896-1978) was born in Rochester NY. He studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere in Paris, which indelibly marked his painterly style. Highly respected by other artists and art connoisseurs of the day, he was a member of the Cape Anne School of Artists, the Glochester Society of Artists, the Allied Artists of America among others. Gruppe's paintings have sold at major actuion galleries such as Sotheby's, Cristies, and Skinners. This work of very approachable size and soft color is oil on board, signed lower right in original frame and - unusually - has a painting study on verso!
