Venice - George Windsor
George Windsor (1833-1906) was an English painter, born in Surrey. Entirely self-taught, he moved to London in 1851 where he managed to apprentice at all of the major galleries in the artistic hotbead of Suffolk Street. Noticed by a wealthy patron who comissioned two pieces in 1862, his career was quickly launched. Between 1864 and 1892 he exhibited at all of the major British Art Institutions with great success. Always pining for his home in Italy, he spent time there between 1878 and 1885, using Venice and Florence as his inpriation. Today, his paintings are present in the collections of the cities of Siena, Verona and - of course - London. This large painting of Venice is a marvel - it is impossible to imagine he attended not a single fine arts school! It is oil on canvas, in original frame, signed lower left.
