Joseph Thors (1835-1884) was a landscape painter who lived in London, but also painted in the Midlands of England where he’s regarded as a member of the Birmingham school. He was a Dutch landscape artist, but is traditionally regarded as British as he located there as a youth. He traveled extensively in France and exhibited at the Royal Academy of arts, the British Institution, and the Society of British artists in London. He exhibited broadly in Birmingham between 1869 and 1900. Sometimes his style is associated with the Norwich school, which he clearly admired, and was influenced by. He painted exclusively in oils, his work, depicting peaceful, English rustic scenes of landscapes, cottages people and animals. Occasionally, he painted river or coastline scenes. His output was prolific, and there are reported to be 14 of his paintings in various public connect collections around the United Kingdom. This particular work is very much classic Thors and is oil on canvas and a spectacular original frame with a frontal name plaque and labels on verso.  This is a larger work.

Measurements 37x27 with frame, 29x19 without.
