On the Meuse - Maurice Levis
This oil on canvas, signed lower left is in it’s original frame, with inscription on verso, is by Maurice Levis (1860-1940), who commands strong prices in the art market. We are delighted to offer it. Born in Paris, he attended the Julian Art School in the late 1870’s where he studied with Jules Lefebvre, and was influenced by Henri Josaph Harpignies and Pierre Billet as his craft matured. Fascinated by the “softness of form” and love of landscape that was the Barbizon school, he often painted rural landscapes in Normandy and Brittany - of which this is a truly fine example. He was elected to the Society of French Artists (which persists to this day) in 1888, and earned Honorable Mention at the Society in 1985, accepting a Gold Medal in 1927. This piece is lush and misty - a bucolic scene of the french countryside.
Dimensions: 29.5"X22" framed, 25"X17.5" unframed
Condition: Very Good
